Story of Alleppey Coir

Allepey, the ancient town in the state of Kerala known around the world for its scenic beauty of backwaters, also holds the excellence for being the cradle of coir industry in India. Coir Yarn have been produced from time immemorial through out the coastal belt of Kerala and the history of organized coir manufacturing industries in Alleppey find its way back to the second half of 19th century when which the manufacturing of value added products from coir yarn had begun here. 'Alleppey Coir' has currently became a geographical indication used for the coir mats, mattings and carpets produced out of the handloom by the traditional coir workers in the Ambalappuzha, Cherthala taluks of Alleppey district and these products are exported traditionally to more than 80 countries around the world.

Our Success Story

How We Started

Over these years, Alleppey coir's name and fame has reached all corners of the world, but the lives of the people who produced these yarns remained in nothing as the giant part of profit from the sales went to the middle men. To save the dependants of coir industry from the exploitation of these middle men and to explore more for the upliftment of this industry, in 1987, a group of small scale coir product manufactures in Cherthala Thaluk of Alleppey district sit around for a discussion and emerged out with the idea of formation of a co-operative society for the welfare of the coir industry and named the same as Sherthallai Thaluk Small Scale Coir Matting Producers Co-operative Society Ltd No.A886.

And We Went on

Along With OurVision

Currently we are having 300 small scales producing units, 600 handlooms and three automatic power looms under the society, which showcases the proof of prosperity achieved through the unity over these years.
The society is looking forward for the production of wide variety of value added products from the coir yarn and to market those products all around the world in the trade name of 'Co-operative Coir'.
The manufactured fabric made of coir yarn produced in the society has been appreciated by national and international buyers for over a decade now. For the society, we all have had wonderful experiences in formulating strategies.

The Society was formed with with the primary aim of saving the coir industry from the exploitation of middle men.
At the same time we are looking forward to find new areas for the upliftment of the entire coir industry together with the attempt for the betterment of small scale product manufacturers.
The Society is also planning to find our own space the market by bringing the products manufactured by our units directly to the customers.
